CCM: Tell us a little bit about your background and what inspires you to write.
WH: I grew up in Michigan surrounded by machinery and industry. I was always fascinated and inspired by inventors like Tesla, and discovered early on that I had a natural ability to engineer and invent. I started work as an engineer and had the opportunity to start several manufacturing companies. I was extremely driven, hard working and had some success but ultimately felt like I was using my abilities in very selfish ways to serve myself.

Everything changed when I had a near death experience involving a gas can exploding in my hand. After a streak of light removed me from the fireball that should’ve killed me, I really started to think about my life and what I was doing. During the time that I was in intensive care, God began to reveal things to me. I had lived a very self-centered and selfish life. In the eyes of the world I was probably considered a “good Christian,” I helped people when they needed it, went to church, prayed before meals, and basically thought I was a good person. I had no relationship with Jesus and was still very much in the driver’s seat of my life. Full surrender had never even been a consideration.

During this time in the hospital, my eyes began to open to what the Lord wanted for my life instead of what I wanted. Eventually this overwhelming sense to write took over, and in 70 days, I wrote three novels. I wrote 12-14 hours a day, for 70 days straight. The original stories were intricate. I had other authors look at the work and they said each book could be 5 books! Because of this, we simplified the story a bit but kept the same feel. We have a lot of material to branch off of later, if God wills.

CCM: Brad, the video for “Fictional” is quite intense…what was the inspiration for it?
BD: We wanted to create a video that would include some of the key characters and moments from the book to give a visual representation of the story.
