Revival is not only who we are musically, but I feel like this record allowed us to be even more true to our roots and what we do musically—probably since the Time (buy) album. So this is a very fulfilling record for us.

CCM: Did you know when you were recording Lead Us Back that it was a single one-off to just shake it up, or do you only realize that after the fact?
MP: Yes, in fact, as we were making it, I can remember saying to the guys in the band, “We have to do this. We have to shake things up and do things different, but I know the next record we make will be an old-school Third Day rock record.” So even then, I had the vision of what we were going to do. It just wasn’t the right time.

CCM: You mentioned Time. You worked with Monroe Jones on this new album, and we know he produced that album as well. Did you reunite on purpose?
MP: That was definitely part of reaching the sound of this record. We brought him in because that’s what he does, and he brings that out of us. We wanted that. Plus, we wanted to record at Muscle Shoals where all of these amazing records have been made since the ’60s—amazing artists like Wilson Pickett, Etta James, Aretha Franklin and so on. We wanted to capture that vibe and energy and feel. That was the perfect place for it and Monroe was the perfect person to bring that out of us.

CCM: There are some fantastic documentaries about that Muscle Shoals sound…
MP: Yeah, we’ve seen those. That was another thing having seen those. I also grew up in Alabama, so you’re aware even then of the Muscle Shoals sound. Mark [Lee] reminded me the other day that years ago we’d played close to Muscle Shoals, about 30 or 40 minutes outside of it, and had driven past the studio. We saw it and wanted then, about 10 or twelve years ago, to record at Fame Studios someday, and now here we are. We’ve finally made it happen.
