CCM: Sure, like Christian rap is supposed to be sub-par?
SM: Or something like that. I think that’s the misconception.

CCM: But for you, Christian hip hop—if that’s what you want to even call it—artists like Lecrae were some of your first introductions, right?
SM: Yeah. The first song I heard was “Breathing To Death” by Lecrae. I’m listening to the words and I’m like, “Man, this is kinda deep.” I was kind-of a small taste of conviction even before I started going to the church.

CCM: Were you already on a spiritual search, or was this your introduction to that?
SM: It was more of an introduction. [At the time I heard that song], it was me just living my life, and I had a lot of craziness going on at the time. I had an identity crisis, growing up without my father and my mom had moved away. My big sister was doing her own thing. So, it was the first time in my life where I was alone. Inside and out. Then God stepped in, man. And it’s been up from there.

CCM: So, take us back to the story of your family…you had not seen your father since you were ten years-old?
SM: Yeah.
