With the songs, we’re also always asking, “What’s helpful for people right now?” There’s a song called “God You’re So Good,” and looking at some other songs happening within the church, it seems like God wants us to sing a lot about his goodness. I don’t know if that’s because we see a lot of disconnect, that maybe our lives aren’t going good and we try to define God that way, or if it’s just something we need to hold onto as a faith anchor, to let that truth that we are in relationship with a good God, a God in control of everything. Another line from Whole Heart says that, “We serve a king with good intentions.” I think there are things like that to help lift our eyes above the craziness of life to help bring peace and stability and help.

So we often ask what would be helpful for people or what do we need to know about God. What do we need to say to God? As that happens, the songs tend to rise to the top.

CCM: From the outside it seems like an automatic that Passion will release an album and that the album will top the charts. What’s the view from the inside on that?
BY: I think it’s just God’s grace on Passion. One thing I love about Louie and Shelley’s leadership is that the message that God has given them to carry and that He’s given all of us at Passion is the same year after year. It’s really simple what we do. We gather people together. We worship through singing. We preach out of the Word of God. Somebody stands up and opens up the Bible and talks about what God is saying. There’s also a justice piece. It doesn’t change year after year, and it’s amazing that God continues to use these things in people’s lives.

One of the things I’ve noticed over the last couple years is that God is raising up new leadership and voices to carry a new generation of students who are right here, right now. What I love is that what our team is doing isn’t anything new or revolutionary. It’s absolutely compelling to college students everywhere or anyone who enters into our story via the music. You can be someone 45 or 50 and still be a part of what’s going on. It’s all because this is what God is doing. He’s drawing people on the earth to know Him through Jesus.
