CCM: What I hear you saying is that the church should be the leader in this conversation. If Jesus is setting this table for us—level ground, everyone’s welcome no matter what—then that’s our example, and racial unity is one of the easiest ways to example this where it can actually be seen, right?
NCM: In John 17, it says, “We’re one by the way we love each other.” That’s the prayer of Christ—that we would be made one. But if we’re continually fighting each other, having this tug of war, then what are we really saying to the world? How can we really say we love Christ? He said, “How can you say you love Me if you won’t love your brother that you can see?”

I would love to challenge some of my Caucasian and African-American brothers and sisters to go outside of your comfort zone and go to lunch, go to dinner, go to coffee, go to the park—invite one another into your home and say, “I would love to hear your story.” All of a sudden we all pull off our masks and get to know each other as human beings. Now, when you start speaking about the other issues that you’re facing, I have a heart for you to defend you. I think that’s what’s needed on a wider scale, but it starts one person at a time.

Jesus said, “Whosoever will, let them come.” You can be black. Whosoever will. Or white. Whosoever will. Or rich. Or poor. Let them come. Everybody’s welcome. Everybody’s included. And you’re worth me hearing. My heart, my soapbox, is unity. It is oneness in the body of Christ.

CCM: So it seems like, with this new record—Like Never Before—there’s a lot of clarity in your speech and what you present. Do you think you have arrived?
NCM: No! But I pray that I’m on a journey to arrival. And when I have completed it, He will say, “Well done.” That’s my heart. So I’m on a journey.
