There was a guy who’s a drummer in one of the metal categories who came up to us and was sharing just how much the song had meant to him, and he actually did a metal version of it that he’s been playing at metal conferences in Europe or something like that. Crazy! Then people in the classical category came up to me and shared about how they go to a little Roman Catholic church, but they sing that song in their services, and they were nominated for a GRAMMY for their amazing work in the classical field. So, from metal to classical, there are believers everywhere.

My take on things was that people felt really excited that the name of Jesus was present in the GRAMMYs in that moment. It wasn’t about Hillsong, it wasn’t even necessarily about the song. Whether they’re part of our church or not, this was a moment for the Church where the name of Jesus could be so prominent at one of music’s most prestigious nights. It was definitely a cool thing.

CCM: We often experience people speaking negatively about Christian music being a part of an awards show, but like you said, how could it really be a negative thing?
BL: People will turn anything into something negative if they want to. You can be a cynic and a critic, or you can actually get off your butt and do something and build the church, and we prefer to be the latter. Obviously, [awards are] a human and earthly accolade, but let’s see it for what it is. Let’s see it as, “Many people will listen to this song now—purely because of the GRAMMY thing—that might have never heard of it or come across it before.” The GRAMMY awards are voted for by the Recording Academy members. Some of them probably vote without listening to it, but maybe there’s a few hundred of them that decided to listen to the songs and maybe heard the Gospel for the first time. Let’s see that for what it is.

None of us are doing this for earthly stuff. We’re a vapor. Then, we’re gone. The grass withers, the flowers fade, but the Word of God endures forever. We know that. We’re not stupid. Well, we [can be], but God uses us anyway. This is an opportunity for people to hear about the name of Jesus, and maybe hear more of who He is, and come across this great story of the Gospel that we are all trying to propagate throughout the nations for the first time. That is the point. Yeah.
