“The plan is to donate the proceeds of the album to a different charity every three months,” she says. “The first is The Next Door, which helps women coming out of prison transition to a new way of life. The next will be an international organization.”

In the midst of her music and philanthropic efforts, Owens is also engaged in an ongoing battle with her health. Just last year, her vocal chords became inflamed to the point of leaving her with no voice at all. While addressing that, she and her doctors also detected an ovarian tumor. She had surgery, but the issues have not been resolved. In her typical fashion, however, instead of feeling or living like a victim, she has chosen to think of these challenges as a growth opportunity.

“I feel God has really stripped away all the things that have given me comfort and identity,” she muses. “I now know that I’ll never be content in my own life unless I allow His voice to be the loudest. Only His presence and contentment could have brought me through these challenges.

He has pulled me away from trying to over-compensate. It’s humbling and been a long journey to let go of the slavery to other people’s opinions. It’s okay to be difference. It’s okay to have a challenge.”

With a renewed sense of self and a greater passion than ever to let Love not only be heard, but to allow it to take the lead, Owens continues to be a light through her music and her life. The purity of her faith and unwavering determination to be all that God has called her to be gives us all hope that we matter and encouragement to face the challenges that lie ahead. Discipline and commitment to quieting the many voices and worldly things that compete for our attention, seeking and very intentionally enabling Love—His Love—to be the loudest.
