Michael W. Smith: ‘Sovereign’ album review

Sovereign  (Sparrow Records)
by Michael W. Smith

FOR FANS OF: Chris Tomlin, Kari Jobe, Hillsong
Rating: 4 Stars

Sovereign, Smith’s first worship record since 2008, shows that the years have been kind to the Christian music icon. Time has granted a lovely depth to his vocal, which is surrounded by smart, fresh arrangements. “Miracle” and “Sky Spills Over” in particular are standouts. “The One That Really Matters” pairs Smith with Kari Jobe for a beautifully nuanced duet. Overall, the record shows Smith returning to what he does best—ushering listeners into worship.
