I don’t want to gain the whole world, and lose my soul…
Lord forgive us when we get consumed by the things of this world, that fight for our love, and our passion…
May your kingdom be, what wakes us up, and lays us down.

“What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul?” (Matthew 16:26)

Have you ever had one of those weeks when you were very busy, yet accomplished nothing? I had one recently. A poor purchase decision triggered a string of subsequent errands that not only stole my time, but my focus on what I should have been doing. I was left weary! The world is like that. It entices us and lures us in, to the point where we lose ourselves in the process.

Not many of us as believers are going to lose our souls by “selling out to the devil.” A few may play the prodigal for a season and forfeit blessings that come when walking with Jesus. But I’d venture to say that most of us can get consumed by the things of this world, that contend for our love, attention, and passion. When those things prevent us from doing what we are supposed to be doing for the Lord and each other, they are stealing our souls. The material things of this world steal the immaterial essence of our very beings – our hearts, minds, and emotions!

Everything the world offers is fleeting. Everything that Jesus offers is eternal. Instead of thinking about that new purchase we can’t live without, or that experience we just have to have, may Jesus and His Kingdom be what wakes us up and lays us down each day!
