We live in a world where collab re-releases are common please and rarely do they top the original. However, this song just found its missing piece. Don’t get me wrong, TobyMac’s Heaven on My Mind is a genuine no skips modern classic , but 15 months after its release “Campfire” isn’t a track I’ve revisited all that often. It’s a casual song in the midst of Toby’s signature explosiveness.
But this new version featuring the recently reunited Third Day scratches all my hard-to-reach mental itches. That sounds weird. Let me explain. For those of us who have spent the last three decades being rocked, encouraged, and comforted by these voices, there’s something special happening here. TobyMac and Third Day represent different corners of Christian music, but they share defining eras that changed the landscape of Christian music. “Campfire” is warm, familiar, and just a little bit nostalgic without feeling stuck in the past.
Too many collaborations today feel transactional. Somebody drops in for a verse they recorded on their phone, emails it over, and checks the box. This isn’t that. Third Day sounds like they’ve always belonged here.
The release also arrives at the perfect time. This fall, TobyMac and Third Day will join Chris Tomlin on a co-headlining tour. Will we hear Toby and Mac… Powell…live on “Campfire” on the road? Either way… this is my definitive version.
Campfire (Logan’s Version).
