Lyric:

The world’s in a hurry this December
City streets and shopping malls
I wish we could slow down and remember
The meaning of it all…
Come back to the heart of Christmas…
The heart of Christmas has a name

Song/Album: “The Heart of Christmas” / The Heart of Christmas
Artist: Matthew West
Writers: Matthew West

Scripture:

“When the angels had left them, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”  So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.” (Luke 2:15-16)

Reflection:

Wow!  Even back then – the very, very, very first Christmas – someone was in a hurry.  But it wasn’t to attend a party, concert, school play or church production.  It wasn’t to go shopping, do decorating, gift wrapping, gift giving, card writing, card sending, baking or cooking.  It was to behold the Christ-child, the Messiah, the Saviour.  It was to see the promise of God fulfilled, the prophecy of Scripture come to pass.  The shepherds made haste to see Jesus!

Of course there’s nothing wrong in doing things for others.  Or taking in the festive events of the season.  They just seem to allure us away from the Heart of Christmas.  When was the last time you or I hurried off to “see” Jesus?  To sit at his feet, and marvel at the miracle of his coming to earth?

The world is in a hurry this December.  Let’s also be in a hurry – to slow down and remember. Let’s make haste to make acquaintance with the King of kings and Lord of lords.  Let’s hold on to the Heart of Christmas.  He has a name, you know.
