For me, Wonder has definitely reawakened that idea that I’m meant to be a child of God. He never calls us “adults of God,” even though we’re called to be mature Christians and we’re meant to grow up in what we believe. We’re not meant to just have milk, we’re meant to have something to chew, meaning our ongoing understanding of who God is. It’s funny how the more we get of God it seems like the less I know and the more I need Him. Which is hilarious, because the more time we spend reading the Bible or having our own time with God, the more you need it and the more you desire it.

I also think about how imperfect we all are here, we’re in a crazy world and we can’t really predict anything. There’s insane stuff that’s going on, but yet again, we’re called to trust Him. We’re called to love God and love people, He didn’t have to put conditions on that. So, I feel like, I don’t know, there’s just something that’s super-releasing about, “I’m you’re kid and You’re my heavenly father and I can trust in You and live through this journey. I don’t have to work things out before my time,” or anything like that.

CCM: It seems a bit of a surprise that Wonder is coming out so soon on the heels of Empires and all of the events surrounding that release…
TS:
I feel like, for me, it just feels right—the timing with all these new songs. For us, the Empires album actually took way longer to make than we expected it would. A couple of us were going through some personal things. Our producer, Mike [Guy Chislett], they just had their baby and then he ended up having some crazy heart trouble and had to go into open heart surgery. There were actually quite a lot of different things that were taking our attention.

In the middle of that we also got the crazy opportunity to be part of a film that highlighted our church, so there was also that stuff going on. We filmed a worship night that we had in the LA Forum. There was also a whole lot of other things… [laughs] From the time we finished touring that album, then Wonder comes along, and I think for us it just feels like we’re excited to sing a new song. It’s not so much the surprise for us that everyone else is thinking that it is.
