David Phelps: ‘Freedom’ album review

With longtime mentor Bill Gaither in the producer’s chair, classically trained tenor David Phelps may take a more organic musical approach throughout Freedom, but still manages to stun with his glorious three-octave range. Whether soulsearching his way through nine originals or taking total ownership of classics like “Ain’t No Grave,” “When The Saints Go Marching In” and “We Shall Behold Him,” Phelps consistently makes the case he’s one of the strongest voices in modern music (Christian or otherwise).
