Skillet hopes to strike gold, well, platinum once again after 2009’s Awake blew audiences away with rock mega-hits like “Monster.” Jon Cooper is still the band’s principal songwriter, but outside influences help bring a varied sound to Skillet’s latest. “Good To Be Alive” rides a mid-tempo pop vibe while lead single “Rise” blisters with greater intensity than most Skillet tunes. Fans might not appreciate some of the newer flavors, but Skillet clearly refuses to rest on their laurels.
