We’re sitting inside the Museum of Christian & Gospel Music, the kind of place that makes you feel every era of Christian music all at once, and I’m already a little nostalgic. “When I walk through here, it’s so nostalgic… it’ll put you in your feels,” I said, probably oversharing like I always do. But that’s kind of the point. As much as the nostalgia surrounds me, I had the opportunity to chat with one of Christian music’s brightest voices, Tasha Layton.
Our conversation today centered around a premiere screening of her new 30-minute documentary, which captures the creation of her latest song, both titled Meet Me In The Valley. “I think we’re all either exiting a valley, in a valley, or heading into a valley. That’s just life… I really needed to get away and hear from the Lord because I felt like some pieces were missing… I was like, how do I help people walk through their own valleys?”
So she did something most of us talk about, but never actually do. She left.
“I spent three days camping out and fasting alone at the bottom of Death Valley… there’s a reason they call it Death Valley. There is nothing there. I mean, no water source. Nothing to eat. I mean, it is literal desert.”
No safety net. Just silence. And God.
We talk a lot about mountaintop moments in church. We don’t talk enough about what it actually feels like when you’re in the valley.
“I did not anticipate some of the things that I would encounter there. I think the fear alone was pretty overwhelming. As I looked out in this valley… I couldn’t see anything for miles and miles.” And yet, somehow, that’s where clarity appeared. I said it sitting there, and I meant it.
I think a song like this is going to give language to people who are in their valley. Sometimes we don’t know what to pray. That’s the power of what Tasha’s created here. “The beautiful thing about songs… is that music bypasses the brain… it’s just going straight to their heart. And the Lord is using that.”
This is where it stops being her story and starts becoming yours.
“My prayer is that people will come away inspired to get with God… to take time to sort through, like, what do I need to acknowledge? What do I need to heal from? If this is where the broken things are brought to life, then lead me through the wilderness, but don’t leave my side.”
See the documentary MEET ME IN THE VALLEY on YouTube premiering on May 7th at 6p CT.
