Band Wagon: Group 1 Crew

Go ahead! Jump on the “Band Wagon”—a column in which we follow the evolving careers of three promising new artists. This month, it’s time for an update from Group 1 Crew.

These days are the quiet before the storm for Group 1 Crew. Their eponymous debut project may not hit retail stores until early next year, but their music is already impacting people. Among them? School kids everywhere who are attending Freedom Experience (freedomexperience.com) events. “What we go in and do [for school assemblies]—we never had that when we were in high school or middle school. It really is fun,” G1C’s Manwell explains. “There’s nothing like going into public schools and being able to encourage the kids. It’s amazing.”

These school programs really reflect the type of ministry Group 1 Crew envisions and embodies. “The more schools that we do, the more we know that [mainstream culture’s] where we want to be ’cause it’s just a different vibe to hit up a group of unchurched kids. And they still love you and feel your music and love every minute of it because it’s hot music. They don’t even think twice about accepting it—they accept it because it’s brought to them in a fashion where they can totally get down with it,” he reflects.
