On the other hand, when it comes to Christian music fans, I love being known as a Christian band because those judgments do not exist. Christians are not going to boo us off the stage when they hear we are a Christian band! So, my answer is this: I will NOT be afraid to talk about Jesus in a relevant way from stage or in an interview. I will
absolutely keep a high standard of righteous, Bible-based living for myself and my band; and my mission in Skillet is not only to make cool music, but to get the message out into the world. That sounds like a Christian band to me! But remember that the majority of people in this country don't know anything about Christian music or even Jesus, for that matter. So sometimes it's smart to rethink our presentation of ourselves and our beliefs—not so we can compromise, but so we can win hearts who were at one time turned off. This is why I call Skillet a rock band.
12. puturhandsup5 asks: What advice do you have to the teens who are trying to stay who they are (and for that matter, deal with what’s going on) in this, um, “messed up place”?John: We are living in a world where we are told what's “cool” and how a person should look; and what they should spend money on if they want to be "normal." It's absolute poo-poo! I'm sick of seeing Hollywood try to convince girls that they have to weigh 95 pounds to be beautiful. I don't know any guys who actually want to marry a skeleton anyway! Parents should be doing a better job of teaching young people that they are beautiful just the way they are. Most importantly though, young people today have to learn to have an eternal perspective. Our society does not value this at all, so we need to be teaching it in the church vigorously. In the scope of eternity, will it matter that you were thin or rich or beautiful, for that matter? If life is really about living for Jesus and telling others about this great love we have, then does it matter if people think you are cool? Weigh the joy of coming before God's throne when you die and having God tell you that you did a good job and that you were a faithful servant with the joy that comes from having a sweet, new iPhone. It's absolute absurdity to compare the two, but we all get off focus. Know what's important in life, and live for those things. Then you will know who you want to be, and "fitting in" will not be so important.
13. mapachito13 asks: What was your inspiration to call yourselves Skillet?John: Skillet started as a side project. The members came from two different bands to collaborate on a few songs and see what happened. My pastor said, “Yeah, it'll be like throwing a bunch of different ingredients in a skillet…”
