John: Being nominated for a GRAMMY and going to the awards show was sweet! This year, we won our first Dove Award. I never thought we would win because we have lost literally 20 times! So that was definitely a highlight.
5. peanut05 asks: When did you become a Christian, and when did you decide to really take your relationship with Christ seriously?John: I became a Christian when I was 5-years-old. That may sound silly, but my mom taught me about Jesus
every day when I was a kid. I just believed in God, and I knew that he was "the boss," if you will. So I asked Jesus to come into my heart as a 5-year-old kid in my bedroom one night. I did not understand everything about the Bible, of course, but I did know for sure that it meant that He would be the most important thing in my life. I made plenty of dumb mistakes and have my share of regrets—things I wish I would have done different in my life—but one thing I have always known since I was a kid: My life belongs to God.
6. rpgmaster1 asks: How do you stay centered in Christ, particularly while on tour when you are unable to attend regular church?John: Staying focused on God on the road is challenging in some ways, but on the other hand, it's not that different from "normal" people's lives. The difference is this: Most people depend on a Sunday morning church service to uplift them for the whole week. Most people go into their lives Monday through Saturday without praying or spending any sort of time with the Lord, but on Sunday they go to church and very sincerely worship God and talk to Him and sort of "refuel" their relationship with God for the next six days. On the road, we don't have those church meetings to "refuel." So we must have our own time with God if we want to remain close to Him. So this is a little different, but it teaches us a pretty important lesson: A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT REFUELING TO START WITH! Feeling "refueled" is a byproduct of walking close to the Lord.
7. punkprincess001 asks: What was your reason to write “The Last Night”? That song has helped me in so many ways and gave me hope that there is a reason to keep living my life.John: I read a book by Ron Luce called
Battlecry for a Generation. It was intended to be an informational book to make people aware of issues that young people are going through. One such issue was cutting. I had heard of it before but did not realize how many people were involved with it. Suddenly, over the next few months, dozens of people came to me after shows and talked with me about their struggle with cutting, and some were leading to suicide. That is when I decided to write a song about it, but did not know how. I prayed that God would give me inspiration, and finally it came—simply a song with two voices having a conversation, and one of the voices is God's.
