The tragic death of 5-year-old Maria Sue left the Chapman family reeling last week. But little did any one expect it to become the huge news story that it did. Thousands are responding in kind. Those closest to the Chapmans have gathered near. However, once the news was immediately released to the public Wednesday night, word of the tragic accident spread like wildfire across the nation, leaving those who didn't even know the Chapmans personally to hurt for them, grieve for them and intercede for them. What is normally a very private, emotional circumstance for a family is quite a public platform and the opportunity to shine for the Chapmans. And shine they have. Most of those who turned out for this weekend's memorial service will tell you that it was one of the most moving and inspiring experiences they have ever been a part of. The outpouring of love for this family has been astounding. As they have loved people well, others are loving them well in return. And that, my friends, is what it's all about. Family, friends, industry professionals, fellow artists and fans alike have taken notice and taken the time to offer up their thoughts on the situation all over the web. Here are just a few links to some key stories from a variety of people (some closer than others to the situation):
Let's start with the source: stevencurtischapman.com. The site was temporarily closed last week due to the large amount of traffic, however, the full site is now up and running again.
Also, Steven's manager and close friend, Jim Houser, has some really moving things to say on his blog. He was actually on the phone with Steven when the accident happened, and he shares some sweet thoughts about Maria and the events that transpired last week.
Locally, the story made the front page of The Tennessean on Thursday. Read the full article here. In addition, Maria's memorial service was given extensive coverage on the front page of an interior section on Sunday.
Here's a youtube video containing a portion of the memorial service. Numerous videos have already been posted in memory of Maria.
Here's the infamous "DishWashin' Daddy" video that has now been shown accross the country.
Artists have responded personally on their websites. Here are links to a few; I'm sure there are many, many others: Michael W. Smith, Third Day, MercyMe, Point of Grace, Rebecca St. James, Louie and Shelley Giglio (Passion/sixsteps). Numerous artists also lent their voices at the memorial service on Saturday: Michael W. Smith, Matt Redman, Christy Nockels and Geoff Moore.
Many radio personalities have responded. One of the more profound responses came from Carmen Brown from Florida's JoyFM. She recently blogged about the memorial service here.
