ASK YOUR FAVORITE ARTIST: BETHANY DILLON [extended edi...

ROB: OK, to lighten it up a bit, what is the most ridiculous movie you’ve seen that made you cry? I’ll give you an example, like I cried in The Grinch where his heart grew three sizes… that was ridiculous.

BETHANY: I’m a sucker for Disneys, for sure. I cry a lot in those. Recently, the one that I cried in and I was like, “I can’t believe I’m doing this,” I have two little brothers and they are 5 and 3 and I was watching the movie Cars with them. Which is a really great movie, but still… I was like, I’ll watch it with them because they’ll like it. The last scene of the movie, I mean I’m weeping. He doesn’t want to win, he wants that other car. It’s pretty cheesy but…

ROB: What’s the most Evel-Knievel-death-defying thing you’ve ever done?

BETHANY: I’m really like an impulsive person, but I’m really not a “Evil Knievel” person. When I was really little, oh my gosh, I have two brothers around my age and we did a lot of really stupid things. Mostly just eating really gross stuff. I let them like jump off things and bleed and cry. But I wanted to eat bugs and mud.

ROB: What’s the grossest bug you’ve ever eaten?

BETHANY: I didn’t eat this bug, but we had a summer where we had a ton of cicadas, kind of like this locust thing, and they leave their shells everywhere and I ate some shells. I didn’t eat the locusts, but…

ROB: I heard you just got engaged. What day is the wedding and who is Mr. Right?

BETHANY: I’m engaged to Shane Bernard, and he’s part of Shane & Shane. He’s been a really dear friend of mine for a long time so its awesome! We’re both traveling and touring a lot this fall and in the spring, so we’re kind of thinking, probably April. Sometime before summer craziness happens. Its really hard, because we do the same thing. It’s a busy time for both of us.

ROB: Yeah, how is that going to work for you guys when you’re on separate tours?

BETHANY: We’re going to try to be together as much as possible, for the first year, especially. I’ve toured with them in the past, so we’re trying to get creative about it. Because it’s so doable. You really want to be around each other, especially for the first year.

ROB: You have a ton of artists’ link on your website, bethanydillon.com. Like a ton of them, I looked through them all and there are some really good artists. Which ones have helped mold the genre and the lyrics of Waking Up the most? I mean, I’m hearing some Keane, some Damien Rice and Coldplay.

BETHANY: I kind of always listen to Sara Groves, I probably shouldn’t even mention it, because that goes without saying. I listen to a lot of this artist named Jonatha Brooke, she’s a folk singer. A lot of worship music, the genre. I listen to a lot of Leeland; their record is amazing. Gosh, I’m trying to think of all of them. I kind of was addicted to this Hillsong record; I had never listen to Hillsong, and I got this record just because I wanted to have church, you know? But I’m really the kind of person who listens to the same four things for a good year. So that was kind of where I was at when I wrote those songs.
