Yeah, it's weird. It depends if the inspiration is there heavy, then it runs and things flow. Other times, I might just hit a brick wall and I just have to be persistent or take time away from it and come back to make it happen. So those are really the only challenges. Nothing too hard that really breaks my. . . I should say, focus to want to do it. I'm usually pretty able and the creativity is usually there to make it happen.
Cool.
But more time in the day would be good.
I hear that.
(laughs)
Is it a different process to work on songs that are intended for your album than it is for a Lightheaded album or someone else's album?
Yeah. I think for this being my second album, there were certain things that I wanted to talk about. So they come pretty naturally. For Lightheaded, they come a different way because I have two other emcees and it's a group effort. They usually have their verses written way before me and I'm usually focused mostly on the beat. So, it's cool because I get to hear what they're saying, but at the same time they really challenge me to step up, even in my writing, to be on point because they're on point. So, I get to a place where I really need to step up whatever I'm going to say. And they're always telling me that stylistically I've got my style and I'm all set, blah blah blah. . .
(laughs)
I'm like, "Yeah, I know people like style and that's important, but I want what I'm saying to come off clever as well." There's times when I need to spend more time focusing on it, but since they are usually done writing ahead of me, I have a good palate of what I can talk about because I see the bases they've covered. So, it's like third base is left open for me to bring it home and just hit it.
That's always good.
Yeah. Now on other occasions, for features for other people. . . Depending on what they give me, if it's a verse or if it ends up being a whole two or three verses for the whole song, some of it can be challenging depending on what it's about and some of them are a breeze. Some of them are like, just talk about a stressful time and it's like, "Cool. I'm in one right now. I'm overworked and I've got a lot of things happening." Yeah, I can talk about taking it easy and how to find peace in the middle of it all.
So, depending on what it is, if it's something that I'm going through at the same time that I'm having to write it or if it's something that I can fully relate with from the past then it can come out a lot easier because there's a story there. But when it's sometimes when it's something that need to be made up, depending on where my mind is mentally, it might be a lot harder. Those at times end up being the ones I have to think the most about and work the hardest at.
