HeadzupFM’s Ministry To Broadcast Holy Hip-Hop

o    Sean Slaughter & Cook Dog - Sean Slaughter and Cook Dog started the What in the Ham Sandwich Show because they were bored with Christian Talk radio. “Christian talk radio was so safe and guarded, but me and Cook Dog felt nobody was talking about the real issues, says Gospel rap artist Sean Slaughter. “So we decided to talk about taboo issues within the church and the world, make fun of them, and then see what the Word says about them. Laughter makes the hard issues easier to talk about”. There have been listeners who have blogged on headzupfm.com, home of the What in the Ham Sandwich Show, saying that they have stopped listening to the Howard Stern show and now listen to the Ham Sandwich Show. “Our main goal” explains Nick Morant aka Cook Dog, “is to make people laugh and win some to Christ.”

·         DJ elder: “From the beginning, our vision was to impact the hip hop culture for Jesus Christ. The scripture of Acts 1:8 had a profound influence upon me, because I believe that Los Angeles is our Jerusalem starting point, but the vision that God has for Headz up goes into Judea, Samaria and the uttermost part of the earth. Amazingly, this is possible through the internet. Initially, I did not call this ministry Headz up. I had planned on using the name “Tha Summit” because I wanted to have a meeting of minds and hearts among the Christian hip hop community in Southern California- but I was informed there was already a ministry using that name so I had to brainstorm and pray that God would give me something that would make an impact. And I came up with the name “Headz up”. It conveys both the plan and purpose of what we are doing now and what we plan to do in the future. We want to give the unsaved hip hop community a “headz up” about the Gospel- and we want to keep our headz up towards the purposes God has in store for us, both as a church plant and an internet radio station. God has impressed on us the importance of outreach, both here at home and on the internet with our radio station Headz up fm. When we began the focus was centered upon gathering as many artists, ministers and people who loved the music into one place on a Saturday in the Los Angeles area. So with a lot of help the first Headz up event took place on May 16 2002 at the Bridge, a church restart in Alhambra, CA. It was an incredible day, many people told me it reminded them of Cru-vention, and there were over 400 people that showed up to see artists performing on two stages. Unfortunately, plans for the next year were shelved and there seemed to be a lack of interest towards these types of events out here in the West Coast- in contrast to the many fine events that take place back east. So from 2002 until 2005 Headz up was in a hiatus of sorts. During that time I was a student in seminary, and I was asking God where He would like me to be, and it seemed clear that I had an open door to restart and refocus Headz up, so I approached one of my professors who is a church planting strategist about starting a hip hop themed church. Now I was well aware of other hip hop churches already existing in Florida, New York, Chicago and Phoenix but this was entirely new in Los Angeles, even though there were churches with hip hop Sundays and special youth group nights I believe we were one of the first in California that were specifically hip hop targeting. So we started with a bible study in my apartment with a few close friends in the summer of 2005. I knew we weren’t finished with just that, and we started having services, first at a hall in Burbank and later at the legendary U-turn Lounge of Sun Valley. Headz up has always had a strong dj presence in the ministry, and last year this month dj one3 and I decided to get our own internet radio station going. We were helping out at another online station but it seemed time to expand and fulfill God’s call for the vision He placed in our hearts. So Headz up became a ministry with a dual capacity- one aspect is a hip hop church, and the other is an online radio station. Now God was not done with His vision for us. I personally was amazed on the response we had concerning the website. It just kept growing and growing. It had to be absolutely God doing this. We both contacted and were approached by dj’s across the nation who wanted to be a part of Headz up fm. It was obvious that we were making a positive impact and once we started a podcast the numbers even grew more. We knew that it was important to be diligent about the upkeep of the website. The scripture of 1st Thessalonians 5:12-13 really spoke to me concerning how we should approach Headz up fm. We believe in the protestant work ethic when it comes to the website. To always be on the grind. Bread always tastes better when it its fresh.  The next stage of our vision is to continue with the ministry of Headz up fellowship, our church and for Headz up fm to continue operating on the internet and beyond. It is our goal to have Holy hip hop broadcast over the Los Angeles airwaves and there currently has arose several opportunities that we are investigating. We are excited that through the internet and airwaves that there is a possibility of reaching millions for Jesus Christ. We are thanking God for entrusting us with this and look forward to what He is going to do in the future.”

·         DJ Heat: Let me first start by saying, that this is the best experience I've had thus far as a DJ. I've been in the mix since 1984. From house parties to college dances to concerts to underground Christian clubs, nothing compares, in my opinion, to mixing on the air on a radio show. A chance to be heard glorifying God with your mixes by millions of listeners is breath taking. I can't thank DJ Elder, DJ One3 and the rest of the Headz Up staff enough. I would love to see this radio station,(the only one of it's kind) be the number one source for the whole world, secular or Christian............
