Finds Its Audience Inside and Outside The Church
Headzup FM-KHDZ Worldwide/Los Angeles is presently an online streaming radio station with an urban gospel, holy hip-hop (Christian rap & R&B) radio format. What sets KHDZ apart from other holy hip-hop stations is its "in the mix" format with some of the best DJ's in the business. Headzup FM currently has 12 dedicated DJs on staff that offer consistent Christian themed hip hop music programming and a really hilarious (yet biblical) morning show hosted by none other than award winning gospel hip hop recording artist Sean Slaughter. Together with his co-host Cook Dogg, they emcee the appropriately titled "What in the Ham Sandwich Show."
In addition, Headzup FM also features DJ One3 with the "Gangsta Boogie Mixtape Show" featuring the hottest holy hip-hop that reaches out to gang members and fans of secular Gangsta Rap. DJ Elder with "Headzup Nites" spins the top grade underground jams. Bird with the U-turn mix show brings east coast and underground hip hop. DJ Born Again's "Holy Hip-Hop Transfusion" captures the hottest holy hip-hop, R&P from the Pray area (nickname for Bay area of CA). DJ Will features the Holy South jams that have been getting the youth around the world excited about holy hip-hop and Southern US Urban Gospel. DJ Heat brings a mix filled with the gospel hip-hop that is making the Christian clubs bounce on the dance floor. DJ I Rock Jesus has the heat coming out the east locked in with his "Live Mix Show."
Sean Slaughter and Cook Dog started the "What is the Ham Sandwich Show" because they were bored with Christian talk radio. "Christian talk radio was so safe and guarded, but Cook Dog and I felt that no one was talking about the real issues," says Sean Slaughter. "We decided to talk about taboo issues within the church and the world, make fun of these issues, and then see what the Word says about them. Laughter makes the hard issues easier to talk about." There have been listeners who have blogged on Headzupfm.com, commenting that they have tuned out of the Howard Stern show and now tune into the Ham Sandwich Show. "Our main goal," explains Sean's co-host Nick Morant (a.k.a. Cook Dog), "is to make people laugh and win some to Christ."
Headzup FM's collective vision and mission for the future is to bring its style of music ministry on the airwaves wherever the Lord has souls in need of the Gospel. "People who were in my mission field, who I never thought would step foot in the church were making altar calls and changing their life styles, " said DJ One 3 (a.k.a. Pete Walker) of the "Gangsta Boogie Mixtape Show. “It was then that I got the vision to take this on a global scale via radio. To find like-minded DJs doing the same in their hoods was such an XL blessing from above... We just had to bring this thing together because gospel music is a powerful tool to reach people for Jesus. Sadly, this music is practically shut out of broadcasted radio. Our ultimate goal is to be up on the airwaves in our home market of California with this same format, mission, and goals."
