It has been three years since Greg Long released Jesus Saves. For those who have patiently hoped for a comparable follow-up, the wait is over. Long’s fourth career disc, Now, showcases his smooth tenor vocals, explores matters of faith simply yet potently, and spawns a versatile collection of adult contemporary pop songs.
Although nothing here is as impactful as his Dove-nominated hit "Mercy Said No," tuneful cuts abound that listeners won’t soon forget. For instance, Long delivers a spirited one-two punch with "Sufficiency of Grace" and "I Won’t Take You for Granted," nicely composed openers destined for heavy radio play.
Long navigates comfortably among sentimental melodies and up-tempo tunes, seven of which he had a hand in writing. And just as with previous efforts, this project displays a passion for Christ and the vulnerability of a man who struggles like the rest of us.
Somewhat disappointing are several forgettable tracks, such as the schmaltzy "Help Somebody Cry" and the lamentably trite "The Gospel." But Long makes good with power ballad "The Sacrifice" and Richard Marx-like ode "The Face of Love." Overall, Now is a worthwhile CD that will likely generate smiles of satisfaction from new and longtime fans alike. -- David McCreary
