Cason Cooley (Andrew Peterson, Katie Herzig), the Nashville producer helming Jason Gray’s creative Christmas charge on his first holiday recording—Christmas Stories: Repeating the Sounding Joy (Centricity), explains how his creative skills and great gear helped keep Christmas fresh in the studio.
CCM: How did your expertise from the control room help Jason better perform Christmas Stories behind the mic? cason cooley: Helping him dig deep into himself and find the sound that represents who he is as an artist... If this record is going to be something he’ll live with and promote for more than a typical business cycle then it needed to be an extension of himself. We tried to build this record for mileage.
CCM: With so many Christmas records on the market, how did you keep Christmas Stories
cason: Jason came to the table with this amazing concept that focused on the stories of the characters. Musically and sonically we tried to represent that in a few different ways.
When we looked at the characters we found they were in distress and longing for a deliverer, and they get one in the most unexpected way. We have people in poverty from the Middle East singing the blues, which makes me think of folk music. So we incorporated some Middle Eastern
