horseshoes & handgrenades (INO Records)
FOR FANS OF: Skillet, Maylene and the Sons of
Disaster, Red
QQQ
Disciple didn’t change up their formula for
this latest project—airtight musicianship with
a dose of surprisingly polished screaming.
Horseshoes & Handgrenades lacks a little bit
of the radio-likeability of bands like Skillet,
but offers listeners a balance of rock ballads
and power songs. “Remedy” and “eternity” are
strong tracks, showcasing Kevin Young’s hefty
vocal. Disciple falters with the frenzied “Battle
Lines,” which veers away from the panache
of the otherwise stalwart album. Overall, a
very well crafted product of a formula that is
obviously working.

The anatomy of Broken (Brash)
FOR FANS OF: Brandon Heath, Paul Colman
QQQ
The synth-to-strings swell that opens the
latest from Chris Sligh lends instant notice
that the former American Idol finalist knows
what a strong pop construct resembles. “Only
You Can Save” bursts out of the blocks in fine
fashion and sets the bar high for the rest of
The Anatomy of Broken.
While subsequent
tracks fail to live up
to such expectations,
that speaks more
to the power of the
first track than any
frustration with the
rest. “Broken (Beautiful)” and “Naïve” are
other highlights on an album living in the
supreme shadow of its initial tune.

conquer suburban life on the aptly-titled
Suburba, but it’s the musical ground they
cover on the album’s 12 songs that’s most
impressive. Moving from Muse-esque
territory on “elevator” to a pop/punk feel on
“Love is For The Middle Class,” HoH deftly
moves across rock’s terrain and feels at
home all the way.
