the Changing of the Guard
(Tooth and Nail Records)
FOR FANS OF: Radiohead, Vampire Weekend
QQQQ
Starflyer may not find a home on the top ten
charts of Christian music, but that doesn’t
mean they don’t deserve a spot. The California
based band, fronted by Jason Martin (Joy
Electric) has proven that some things only get
better with time. Newest effort The Changing
of the Guard is a quiet example of authentic
and quirky art. Anchored by sweeping
arrangements and soothing, melancholy
vocal, every song is a jewel. Standout tracks
include the redemptive “The Morning rise/
Frightened Eyes,” which illuminates the joy
that roots this stunning effort.

Adding extras to stimulate fourth quarter
sales of their latest worship bestseller,
Kutless gifts fans with one brand new studio
recording (a cover of FEE’s “Beautiful the
Blood”) and four live cuts from their recent
arena tour. But new
material merely
expands the package
with boring covers,
rather than upping
the ante with original
gems. If you are a
Kutless newbie, this
is certainly a best buy. otherwise, save your
pennies for the Gold-sellers’ next studio
release.

Monster, Monster Deluxe Edition
(Tooth and Nail Records)
FOR FANS OF: Everyday Sunday, Foo Fighters
QQQ
deluxe editions must
be something pretty
special to entice
listeners to purchase
them again...The
Almost offers a fairly
convincing record
with the release of
their 2009 album, Monster, Monster. It gives
devoted fans of their rock (think Thrice
on a softer day) sound a crisp four extra
songs, including the catchy “out west”
that actually sounds like early Switchfoot.
The only somewhat mediocre track is the
formulaic “wrong.” regardless, fans will
most likely gleefully indulge themselves in
this re-release.
