CINDY MORGAN Hymns: Some Glad Morning (Barefoot Mama Records) FOR FANS OF: Nichole Nordeman, Creative Reinventions QQQQ Familiar tunes abound on Cindy Morgan’s Hymns: Some Glad Morning, but each and every track brings a questioning glance and some form of the question, “This can’t be [insert track name here], is it?” Therein lies the beauty of Morgan’s reinventions. Each song roots itself just enough in the rich Gospel tradition without relenting to the predictable formats that have gone before. “I’ll Fly Away” is a front porch romp with rich harmonies, upright bass and slide guitar. Morgan is in full control on this project, and her creative mastery of the material makes this perhaps the best hymns project ever released. - Andrew Greer WE LIKE: “Worry” THE BRIGHTON The Brighton (self-released) FOR FANS OF: Ray LaMontagne, Damien Rice, Jason Gray QQQQ Minneapolis newcomer Ben Rosenbush, better known to fans as The Brighton, may be an indie artist, but he already has friends in high places (including guest guitarist Tyler Burkum of Audio Adrenaline fame and acclaimed engineer Matt Patrick). Nonetheless, he packs plenty of tunesmith talent on his own, lacing this project with folk-fl avored pop tunes tipped with brass and strings, all wound around confessional lyrics that are surprisingly catchy in the process. - Andy Argyrakis WE LIKE: “Safe Harbor” THE BURCHFIELD BROTHERS Times and Seasons (Self-Released) FOR FANS OF: Starfi eld, Manheim Steamroller QQQ After 20 years of recording and performing varied instrumental arrangements, The Burchfi eld Brothers now release their greatest hits entitled Times and Seasons. It’s a proper descriptor for the familiar tunes within, as the Tennessee duo utilizes an impressive sonic palette to uniquely frame each song within. “Be Thou My Vision” fi nds a peaceful, stoic treatment, while “To Him Who Sits On The Throne” fi nds an unexpected salsa and sizzle involved.
