Every day it seems there are new ways for emerging artists to reach the planet with their music. What a great time to be alive if you are motivated, have talent and are willing to work hard. The world is literally at your fingertips.

And in the middle of all of this crazy opportunity for independent artists I see a lot of people, who are constantly being pulled from one strategy to another, from one person’s advice to another, running in circles – and after all of that effort, really getting nowhere.

For any winning team to take the ball down the field and score the big win they have to rely on a known play book, a decided team philosophy, and an experienced coach to call the right plays at the right time. No matter how talented and capable the team members may be, without the right coach on the sidelines … running random plays would just end up exhausting and discouraging everyone.

Most developing artists that I talk with feel overwhelmed by all of the options they have to consider, all of the outlets, all of the ideas on what they should be doing to move their careers forward. Obviously the music business is in a huge state of change, which is making less and less room at the top. So now more than ever, every artist has to define their strategy and become intentional about their craft and career. In this era of seemingly endless options and change, it’s even more critical to be decisive and have clarity about who you are and why you are doing what you are doing.

Have you taken the time to write out your own vision statement as an artist? Have you defined exactly why it is that you are singing, writing or recording, and what your message is? Have you thought through who the audience is that you are meant to connect with and how you can reach them? Have you taken an honest look at your own assets and liabilities, and made a list of people who could help you in areas that aren’t your strengths? As you gather answers to these questions, then you can begin to build a successful strategy to grow your music career in a way that supports your art, your fans and your life in a meaningful way.

Maybe you need some help to find these answers. Maybe you would benefit from some outside perspective on your songs, your music, your approach, or your goals.
