Lyric: “I’d be packing my bags when I need to stay
I’d be chasing every breeze that blows my way
I’d be building my kingdom just to watch it fade away…
And where would I be without You?”
Song/Album: “Me Without You”, Eye On It

Scripture: “Then said Jesus to the twelve, ‘Will you also go away?’ Simon Peter answered him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.’ ”
Reflection: Jesus had been on the scene for over two years. His followers were used to the miraculous healings, multiplication of food, and authoritative teachings. What they weren’t used to was a Jewish Rabbi instructing them to eat of his flesh and drink of his blood (see John 6:48-58). Now Jesus was sounding like a madman and many of his followers left – this teaching was just too hard. It’s at this point that Jesus asked his twelve disciples if they, too, wanted to leave. And Peter, in his typical impetuous form, blurted out, “Lord, to whom shall we go?”
Interesting. Peter had a wife and family and fishing career. He had a place and people to go to if he left Jesus. But he recognized the words (and source) of eternal life! Jesus was more than someone to follow – He provided hope, filled him with peace, and gave purpose and meaning to his life. Peter was also able to see past the physical aspect of Jesus’ teaching and grasp the spiritual. Jesus was the bread of life, the living bread, life itself.
There’s no doubt that for us work and study can bring fulfillment. It’s certain that people can bring purpose to our existence. But we were created as eternal beings, with a need for an eternal purpose. Only Jesus can fulfill that need! If we follow Him and keep his commandments, we too, shall be offered hope, peace, purpose and meaning for our lives.
So where would we be without Him? In a very empty place. And hungry.
